Millenium Development Goals

In this posting, I will try to write about The Millenium Development Goals (MDGs). Anybody knows about this issue? As the younger generation, I am very interested in discussing about human issues especially in my country, Indonesia. For your information, MDGs are 8 international development goals that all 192 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations have agreed to achieve by the year 2015. What are they? MDGs essentially embody the international commitments made at the United Nations World Summits and global conferences throughout the 1990s. By signing the Millennium Declaration world leaders pledged to halve the proportion of people suffering from hunger, ensure that all children can complete primary education, eliminate gender disparity at all levels of education, reduce under-five and infant mortality rates by two thirds, and halve the proportion of people without access to improved water sources by 2015.

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce Child Mortality Rate
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Develop a global partnership for development

The facts in Indonesia :
-More than 35 million people, 15.4% of the population live below the national poverty line
-The proportion of the population with sustainable access to clean water and sanitation has not increased significantly
-More than 30% people in urban areas and 50% in rural areas do not have access to piped drinking water
-Indonesia’s maternal mortality rate of 307 per 100,000 remains one of the highest in Southeast Asia
-HIV/AIDS infection in accelerating sharply across the country; Papua and high-risk urban areas are of particular concern
-Approximately 95 percent of children enroll in primary school, but only 81 percent continue to secondary school
-Between 1997 and 2000, Indonesia lost 3.5 million hectares of forest annually

Indonesian Government's efforts to realize the MDGs by 2015 will be difficult because at the same time the government also must bear the burden of huge debt payments. I hope Indonesia will not fail to reach the MDGs. Pray for this guys. "BERSAMA MENUJU TERCAPAINYA MDGs DI INDONESIA SEBELUM 2015"
